Balmir Latin Dance Studio
About the studio
Balmir Latin Dance Studio (also known as Balmir Dance Society and Balmir Afro & Latin Dance Studio) is a long-running Latin dance school in Flatbush, Brooklyn, founded in May 2011 by Eric Balmir and acquired in September 2018 by artist and instructor Jessica J. Silva. The studio operates from one of the largest hardwood dance floors in Brooklyn — over 1,500 square feet — at 959 Flatbush Avenue, with a state-of-the-art sound system. Its core curriculum covers Salsa On2 (New York style), Bachata, Kizomba, Semba, Afro, Hustle, Cha Cha, Hip-Hop, and Pole Dance, taught at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels for adults, plus kids dance and karate programs. Salsa is taught in Level 1 (Beginners) and Level 2 (Intermediate) cycles, while Kizomba runs as 4-week and 9-week Friday-night cycles starting at $25. Drop-in classes are $20, with 5/10/20-class packages available, and private lessons start at $80 per hour for up to two students. Balmir Latin Dance Company has performed at salsa congresses in Rome, Peru, Punta Cana, Toronto, Mexico, and Trinidad & Tobago, and has been featured on PIX11 morning news and at the People En Español Festival representing the New York International Salsa Congress. The studio also hosts seasonal free Salsa socials at the Brooklyn Museum and rents space for workshops, weddings, sweet 16s, and other events. As of late 2025 the studio announced a temporary closure and relocation, so dancers should confirm the current schedule and location via Instagram before visiting.
