You dance inside a roofless 16th‑century monastery: the Ruinas de San Francisco is an open‑air courtyard ringed by stone walls in Santo Domingo’s Zona Colonial (Calle Hostos x Emiliano Tejera). Every Sunday the Bonyé social brings salsa and bachata sets that alternate through the night; entry is free. There’s no club layout — no raised wooden floor, no boothed DJ stage — just a central paved space where DJs or players set up at the side.
Because it’s an archaeological site expect uneven stone underfoot, no permanent cloakroom and basic lighting after dark. Sound bounces off the walls, so the music can feel raw compared with an indoor sala. Check Grupo Bonyé’s Facebook/Instagram before you go for time or weather changes; arrive early if you want room to dance rather than standing at the edges. Bring comfortable shoes for the stones.
